The Ocean Globe Race is inspired by the pioneering spirit of the first great crewed races by following the same route as the 1973 Whitbread. For many, this race will revive the Adventure as it existed before budgets became inaccessible to enlightened amateurs. The rules require boats designed before 1988 and limit electronic aids.
The 4 stages (to be confirmed) will be : Les Sables d’Olonne – Cape Town ; Cape Town – Sydney ; Sydney – Punta del Este ; Punta Del Este – Les Sables d’Olonne. The departure will take place on September 10, 2023, and the arrival will take place at the end of the following April, after an adventure of eight months, covering 27,000 nautical miles.
22 boats are already registered for the race in 4 different classes, including a majority of Swans from 51 to 65 feet, but also with the participation of “historical” boats that have raced in a Whitbread, such as Pen Duick VI, Maiden or Team Spirit.
It will undoubtedly be a major media event mixing grey hair with the enthusiasm of youth by highlighting the values of transmission.
