It all started with Francis Chichester on the Tea and Spice route in 1967, then Robin Knox Johnston the first non-stop record-breaking Solo in the Golden Globe Race, before the Yachting establishment thought: Why not! With the help of Sir Robin, the first crewed round-the-world race with stopovers was born in 1973: The Whitbread (which became the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001).
For many of us this race represents the adventure, the enthusiasm of youth and the discovery of exceptional sailors: Tabarly, Blake, Van Rietschoten, Blyth, Knox-Johnston and of course the Mexican Ramon Carlin, winner of the first Whitbread in 1973 with his Nautor Swan 65: “Sayula II”.
Mad Atao means “Always valiant” in Breton. Today this inspiring name gives shape to a new adventure: Sail a Swan 59 in coastal races over the next three years (2022 – 2024) and participate in the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Whitbread, the Ocean Global Race which will start from a European port on September 10th, 2023.
